Parks in Chesapeake, VA

With summer officially in high gear, it's time to get outdoors and enjoy. Check out the beauty of Chesapeake, VA by finding a park for every interest. Here are some great local suggestions.

Dismal Swamp Canal Trail

The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail is a far happier place than its name may imply. This multi-use trail is made from an old state highway route and is open to biking, jogging, horseback riding, and boating. The trail is home to many wildlife species including many migratory birds in the fall and spring. A popular annual even is "Paddle for the Border," attracting paddlers of all ages from Maryland to Georgia.

Chesapeake City Park

A large and up to date facility, City Park is 90 acres lined by pine trees, with 60 acres being open area. Home multiple specialty attractions, the facility includes the Robert G "Buddy" Bagley Stage which host many summer outdoor concerts.

Deep Creek Park

Enjoy the stone dust perimeter walking trail or one of the many picnic shelters. This park is home to some of the areas best summer sporting activity including four lighted tournament quality baseball fields. As one of the larger parks around, a map is offered to help you find your way around.

Northwest River Park and Campground

A great place for more than just day tripping, this 763 acres park is managed by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to ensure stocked sporting areas. With year round recreation, this park also boasts hors shoes, volleyball nets, and a putt-putt course. Camping is available in 66 different tent sites and two cabins.

Oak Grove Lake Park

Enjoy the 1.5 miles fitness trail around the lake (ADA accessible). Enjoy the many fishing and observation platforms. This 65 acre combination of hardwoods and wetlands is a scenic escape for all ages.

Fun Forest

Located in the three acre City Park, this family area is an attraction of its own. Awarded the Parks Society "Best New Facility in Virginia" when it was built in 1996, this playground has areas for both older and younger children. Entertainment includes a dragon, underground telephone with three-way "calling", shaking bridge, dolphin slide, and much more.

Skate Park

For local thrill seekers, the skate park is open daily for skateboards, roller skates, or in-line skates. Obstacles include "a spine ramp, hip ramp, and a three-quarter pipe". Parks officialsrequirehelmets and a valid 2014 sticker at all times. Open hours are weather dependent.

Dog Parks

There is not just one, but three dog parks to choose from in the Chesapeake area. Let your four-legged family member enjoy all the fun along with you in approved and fenced running areas. These pet-friendly facilities also offer waste bags and water fountains. City Park offers both small and large dog areas, with small dogs being those 25 lbs and under. Western Branch Park has an area near the community center featuring covered picnic tables and benches. Deep Creek Park has an all-inclusive area that is 1.5 acres. Located near a playground, this park offers something for everyone.
