Camping in Virginia Beach

For many people, camping is an annual summer tradition. There is nothing like escaping to the great outdoors and experiencing nature. What is exciting about camping the Virginia Beach area is that are plenty of places to stake down your tent and enjoy the beach. Of course, there is plenty of room for the RV crowd, too.

First Landing State Park

This park features 2800 acres of space with nearly 1.5 miles of beach to wander on. First Landing State Park is rich with history and is the location of the first landing of the Jamestown colonists in 1607. It is even rumored that the infamous pirate Blackbeard hid here along the Narrows.

An all African-American crew of the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed this beautiful park during the Great Depression. There are over 20 miles of scenic hiking trails throughout the park.

First Landing State Park offers more than 200 camping spaces differing in location, size, and distance apart for each space. Most sites are unimproved with common area water access for campers. For those of you who don’t like to rough it out, there are 50 RV spaces with electric and water at each site.

Camping fees for each site vary from $24 to $32 per night. Group locations are $24 per night for each space within the group site. Additional charges for tax and reservation fees are added to the camping fee. With plenty of restrooms and hot shower facilities arranged around the camping areas, there is no need to worry about hygiene.

On the opposite side of the park, there are 20 rental cabins available. Rates are $94 to $139 per day based on the season of rental and your state of residency. During peak summer months, a minimum stay of one week is required.

Reservations can be made online at Reserve America, and you will be required to create an online account to make the transaction. Otherwise, you can contact the Virginia Parks Reservation Center at 1-800-933-7275.

Holiday Trav-L-Park

The Holiday Trav-L-Park is located within a mile of beach access, and offers many amenities that other local campgrounds do not. This private park is very improved and offers over 800 campsites from basic to fully developed with water, sewer, and electrical. There are also 44 cabins available to rent. This park even offers Wi-Fi service for a nominal fee for those who cannot escape the pull of the Internet.

There is room for 150 vehicles at the beach parking area, 24-hour onsite security, bike trails, and very clean restroom facilities with private showers. Other amenities available year-round are:

  • Covered picnic area
  • A one-acre dog park with a separate area for smaller pooches
  • Convenience store and gas station near the park entrance
  • Laundry facility with large capacity washers
  • Onsite sewage dumping station and propane refilling

While this park is not exactly the definition of roughing it for camping, it is still a pleasant getaway. Rates are reasonable and change by the season, and on the particular amenities available for the space rented. For more information contact the Holiday Trav-L-Park for reservations and rates.
