New cars and trucks sold in the U.S. last year got an average of 23.6 m.p.g. in combined city and highway driving, a record that came mainly through improvements to engines and transmissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mazda led all automakers with an average of 27.1 m.p.g., followed closely by Honda with 26.6 and Volkswagen at 25.8. Chrysler-Fiat, which relies more on trucks and larger cars for its sales, had the worst mileage at 20.1, followed by Daimler, maker of Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles, at 21.1. General Motors, which also sells a lot of trucks and SUVs, was third from the bottom at 21.7 m.p.g., according to the report.

The increase for 2012, the latest year for which full calculations are available, was 1.2 m.p.g. above 2011’s number, the second-largest annual increase in 30 years, the agency said in an annual report released Thursday. The EPA is estimating that the average mileage of 2013 cars will rise another 0.4 m.p.g. to 24. Final figures for 2013 won’t be available until next year.

Last year was the first year that automakers fell under more stringent government fuel economy regulations that will require them to sell cars and trucks that get a combined 54.5 m.p.g. by 2025. Carbon dioxide emissions also are at a record low, 376 grams per mile.

Christopher Grundler, director of the EPA’s office of Transportation and Air Quality, said many automakers already are meeting gas mileage standards for 2016 because of innovations.

Automakers are offering more efficient engines, multiple-speed transmissions that keep engines at peak efficiency, and turbocharging that gives smaller engines more power when needed.

They’ve also reduced weight by using lighter materials, powered more pumps off a battery rather than the engine to eliminate drag, and they’ve improved aerodynamics of new cars so they slice through the wind with less resistance.

Gasoline prices also were relatively high in 2012, and that helped steer people toward sales of more efficient vehicles, Grundler said.

“Manufacturers and suppliers continue to develop great new technology,” he said. “More consumers value fuel economy than in the past. So there was very strong demand.”

Gas mileage is up 12% since 2008 and 22% since 2004, according to the report.

The government gas mileage requirements get tougher to meet as the years progress toward 2025, but Grundler said he’s confident the auto industry has shown it has the innovation needed to meet the challenge.

The cost of cars will rise gradually as automakers spend on new technology to get better mileage, but that will be more than offset by savings in gasoline spending, Grundler said.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that it will construct an engine machining factory at its new vehicle production facility in Mexico, Mazda Motor Manufacturing de Mexico S.A. de C.V. (MMMdM). MMMdM is a joint venture between Mazda and Sumitomo Corporation.

The new factory will make SKYACTIV engines for vehicles produced at MMMdM such as the Mazda3 (Axela in Japan) and Mazda2 (Demio). It will produce approximately 230,000 engines per year with operations expected to begin in October 2014. MMMdM will invest 120 million U.S. dollars (approximately 12 billion yen) in the new factory and employ approximately 100 extra people to operate it.

At MMMdM, construction of the buildings which will house the vehicle and engine assembly lines is complete and preparations are being made for the start of operations in the fourth quarter of fiscal year ending March 2014. The establishment of the new engine machining factory will further strengthen Mazda’s production system for SKYACTIV technologies. Also, by localizing production and increasing the number parts procured locally, Mazda will enhance its ability to withstand exchange rate fluctuations.

MMMdM’s President and CEO, Keishi Egawa, commented, “MMMdM will play a key role, supplying vehicles to North, Central and South America. We are very happy to be able to strengthen its foundation as a vehicle supply base and enhance our engine production framework in Mexico. July 1, 2013 (IRVINE, Calif.) The scales have tipped. After seven races, the SpeedSource Mazda team has now delivered four-straight race wins. Mazda is now just one point behind Porsche for the 2013 Grand-Am GX Manufacturers Championship with five races remaining.

The Sunday race win was the longest distance race win to date for the all-new Mazda6, taking the GX class win at the Sahlen’s Six Hours at Watkins Glen. Scoring the win was the #00 VISIT FLORIDA Racing Mazda6, driven by Joel Miller, Tristan Nunez, and Yojiro Terada.

The all-new SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel engine in the all-new Mazda6 is a true production based engine. The engine is 51% stock by parts count, and 63% stock by weight. Mazda chose this path as it is the most honest way to demonstrate the quality, durability, and reliability of Mazda cars.

Meanwhile in the Continental Tire Challenge…..

The day before the Sahlen’s Six Hour Grand-Am race, the Continental Tire Challenge held round seven of their 11-race championship. The first six races have been a battle between Mazda, BMW, Honda, Nissan, Porsche, and VW in the ST class. Thanks to a great win by Steven McAleer and Marc Miller in a CJ Wilson Racing Modspace Mazda MX-5, the Mazda win count stands at three, and Mazda has taken over the points lead for the 2013 ST Manufacturers Championship.

Quotes:

John M. Doonan, Director, Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations:

“When we rewind the clock six months and look how far the Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel program has come, we are certainly proud. From the challenges we faced – and were able to overcome – in the early weeks of the season, to now be celebrating our fourth victory in a row is really special for all of us at Mazda, the entire SpeedSource organization, and our partners at VISIT FLORIDA, Castrol, and ModSpace. A first place trophy from the Sahlen’s Six-Hour at the Glen is one we have wanted in our trophy case for a long time and we have had victory here on our minds since Daytona. Victory in the second longest race of the season allowed us to, once again, prove our new technology and our new car. We will continue to focus on refining the package and turn our full attention to the manufacturer, team, and driver championships. Taking the Continental Tires ST Manufacturers points lead, thanks to the CJ Wilson Racing team win on Saturday made a great weekend even better.”

Joel Miller, co-driver, #00 VISIT FLORIDA RACING Mazda6 – now second in the Driver’s Championship:: “The SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel technology worked very well in today’s six hour race. Everything was great – the Mazda6 was fantastic, the SpeedSource crew was great during the pit stops, and my teammates did their parts. The last hour was long, knowing we had the lead. I would not have changed anything during that hour as it is always a pleasure bringing the car home for the win! So thankful to everyone, VISIT FLORIDA, our SpeedSource crew, and all the Mazda executives that came this weekend. Win number four in a row!”

Tristan Nunez, co-driver, #00 VISIT FLORIDA RACING Mazda6 – the 17-year-old racer who had to be legally emancipated to race in New York:: “It was a long process to get the chance to race at Watkins Glen with all the emancipation court dates and papers to sign but it was all worth it in the long run. The track is one of a kind. Very fast and has a nice flow to it. But it does have a bit if a danger factor to it, the track and very little run off and is surrounded by guard rails. With all of that aside Joel Miller, Yujiro Terada, and myself came out with a win in the visit Florida SKYACTIV-D Mazda 6. Every race weekend we are proving more and more that our new clean diesel Mazda 6 can not only go the distance but also has the speed to win races.”

IRVINE, Calif., July 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced updated pricing of its all-new 2014 Mazda6 midsize sedan, now featuring the ground-breaking regenerative engine braking system known as i-ELOOP. When coupled with SKYACTIV®[1] TECHNOLOGY, the brand’s fuel-efficient and performance-oriented engineering philosophy, the Mazda6 will achieve best-in-class fuel economy amongst competing gasoline-powered vehicles with an EPA-rated 28 city/40 highway/32 combined mpg. When not i-ELOOP-equipped, the 2014 Mazda6 still achieves class-leading highway fuel economy at 38 mpg.

“Mazda is again changing the game of automotive engineering, this time making fuel efficiency not seem as a compromise but a true complementary feature as part of the complete vehicle package,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. “With the addition of i-ELOOP, the 2014 Mazda6 will achieve the best mileage for a non-hybrid midsize sedan. But fuel economy isn’t the sole focus of our engineering and design teams, as being a leader in dynamics, design and safety create a win-win for the company and consumers.”

With its name derived from “Intelligent Energy Loop,” i-ELOOP is a capacitor-based regenerative engine braking system that converts a vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity as the car decelerates. The electricity captured is then stored for later use to power all the vehicle’s electrical components, such as headlights, climate control and audio systems. This reduces the need for the engine to burn extra fuel in order to generate electricity and, therefore, improves fuel economy without sacrificing driving performance. In order to efficiently recapture the kinetic energy and convert it into electricity, i-ELOOP utilizes a 12- to 25-volt variable voltage alternator, a DC/DC converter and a low-resistance, high-capacity electric double layer capacitor (EDLC).

Conventional alternators are constantly charging the battery in an effort to keep up with a vehicle’s electrical loads, which means using engine power to operate the alternator, which, in turn, consumes fuel. With the i-ELOOP system in operation, the alternator is free-wheeling, creating almost no parasitic drag on the engine, which reduces the amount of fuel used. Upon vehicle deceleration, the engine and alternator continue to spin as the vehicle slows down, working off of the vehicle’s inertia. To take advantage of this free energy, i-ELOOP’s special variable-voltage alternator kicks in and generates short bursts of electricity that is stored within the capacitor. The capacitor then meters power out into a smooth, continuous flow to satisfy energy loads.

While the increased engine braking caused by the hard-charging alternator is too small for drivers to feel, the smooth power delivery coming from the capacitor means the electrical systems do not operate differently with i-ELOOP. Exact fuel savings will vary based on electrical load and individual driving habits.

On sale now, the 2014 Mazda6 starts at $20,990[2] MSRP and is available in three trim levels – Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Featuring a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine as standard equipment, Mazda6 vehicles offer 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Sport ($22,695 MSRP) and Touring ($23,645 MSRP) models are available with either a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency when paired with the manual transmission for non-i-ELOOP cars is rated by the EPA at 25 city/37 highway/29 combined mpg and increases to 26 city/38 highway/30 combined mpg with the automatic.

A mid-year add-on, the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission is now available on the Touring trim. The SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission adds $1,050 to $24,695 MSRP, but equipment and features remain the same for all Touring models, including offering new vehicle features such as a Commander Switch for the 5.8-inch display screen and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The all-new Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will continue to be available as part of the Touring Technology Package ($2,000 MSRP).

Available on Grand Touring models ($29,695 MSRP), i-ELOOP will be part of the new GT Technology Package ($2,080 MSRP) which features additional vehicle equipment such as a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), High Beam Control (HBC), Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), a Sport mode button and active grille shutters. The stand-alone MRCC/FOW Package, which includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), is still available for Grand Touring models but will be phased out in the coming months.

Earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), standard safety features for all 2014 Mazda6 models include six airbags (front, side and full side-curtain), whiplash-reducing front headrests, power-assisted ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, daytime running lights, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a Traction Control System (TCS), hill launch assist, a fold-away brake pedal assembly, a trunk entrapment release system, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), three-point safety belts for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH).

Touring models feature a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) as standard equipment with the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system available as part of an optional package. Grand Touring models feature BSM, RCTA, SCBS and an Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) as standard equipment. Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and High Beam Control (HBC) are available as part of an optional package.

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Last evening, the all-new 2014 Mazda6 was presented with the prestigious Gene Ritvo Award for Design and Elegance from the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) in conjunction with Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.

The Ritvo Award honors the best in design in the automotive world, whether it’s a concept car, production vehicle, a marketing campaign or a particular element of a vehicle that defines elegance in design.

“The 2014 Mazda6 is a stunning example of the real-world application of the ‘Soul of Motion’ design language,” said NEMPA President Keith Griffin. “It was beautiful on the TAKERI concept and now is a stunning sedan that is turning heads around the world. Gene Ritvo would be proud to have his name associated with the Mazda6.”

“The subtle but distinctive styling of the Mazda6 caught my eye when reviewing entries for the Ritvo Award,” said Meghan Melvin of the Museum of Fine Arts. “After reading the accompanying description, I was struck by the fact that the KODO design language was clearly reflected in this particular model.”

An evolution of the TAKERI Concept, Mazda6 features the brand’s KODO “Soul of Motion” design language, which is inspired by the movement of animals in the wild—their ability to showcase power in its purest form combined with agile finesse. KODO’s prominent personality, inside and out, easily distinguishes the Mazda6 from competitive people movers, whose personalities seem to have been relegated to match their prudish exteriors. With pronounced sheet metal strokes, the vehicle evokes a controlled intensity, seemingly moving yet standing still. Not meant to be ignored, the stunning Mazda6 presents an uncommon but welcome appeal of emotion to the mid-size segment.

On sale now, the 2014 Mazda6 starts at $20,880[1] MSRP and is the second vehicle in the Mazda lineup to fully incorporate SKYACTIV®[2] TECHNOLOGY, the brand’s breakthrough engineering approach toward increasing overall vehicle efficiency. Offering both powerful performance and improved fuel economy, the 2014 Mazda6 features best-in-class highway fuel economy of 38 miles per gallon (MPG). Available with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine, a SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine will be offered on 2014 Mazda6 vehicles during the second half of the year.

Also taking home an award was the MX-5 Miata. Miata is as uncomplicated and pure as a sports car can get. Since the two-seater entered the marketplace more than 20 years ago, the MX-5 has defied the convention that sports cars, particularly convertibles, were pricey, unattainable flights of fancy reserved for those with deep pockets. But enthusiasts come in all shapes, all ages, and with a variety of pocket sizes so it’s no wonder that with more than 900,000 units sold, the MX-5 is by far still the best-selling two-seat roadster in the world, and with the Guinness World Records to prove it.
